Katko Announces Nearly $2 Million in Federal Funds for Early Education Programming in Wayne County

Press Release

U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today announced $1,937,182 in federal funds will be distributed to Wayne County Action Program, Inc. to bolster their Head Start Program. Locally, Wayne County Action Program, Inc. provides education, nutrition, and health services to underserved individuals, children, and families in Wayne County.

These funds are available through the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, and administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These programs promote the development and school readiness of infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children from low-income families. In Congress, Rep. Katko has led bipartisan efforts to deliver additional funding for Head Start programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rep. Katko introduced the Jumpstart for Head Start Act, a bipartisan bill that would provide emergency funding for Head Start to allow local programs to continue supporting local youth while adopting important public health measures. Through bipartisan advocacy, this funding was included in the COVID-19 relief package signed into law in December.

"Today, I'm announcing Wayne County Action Program, Inc. is receiving nearly $2 million in federal funds to bolster their Head Start Program," said Rep. Katko. "In Wayne County, Head Start is an invaluable resource. Each year, hundreds of local children receive quality educational programming to help them develop and prepare for school. Unfortunately, at a time when these services are needed most during the pandemic, many Head Start providers have been burdened with new costs that threaten their ability to continuing serving families in-need. With this new funding, children in Wayne County will have the resources they need to grow."
